45/70 Govt. Caliber
45/70 Govt. is an American centerfire rifle cartridge developed by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company in 1873. It was designed to be used in the new trapdoor Springfield Model 1873 rifle and was chambered for use against Native Americans and in the Plains Indian Wars. The 45/70 Govt. was also used during the Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam wars by various military forces around the world who had purchased this weapon system from Springfield Armory or Colt Manufacturing Company (the two largest manufacturers).
The 45/70 Govt. has been cited as being one of the most powerful rifle cartridges ever produced; however there are other contenders for that title such as 50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun), 12 Gauge Slugger Shells (.729 caliber) etc…
Factory Blue Finish
The blued finish is a durable and traditional finish that has been used on hunting rifles for generations. A blued rifle will last longer than other types of firearms, such as stainless steel or nickel plated models. The blue color can vary from light to dark depending on the manufacturer and model, but generally speaking it’s a darker shade than silver or gray.
20″ Barrel Length
This rifle has a 20″ barrel length, chambering 45/70 Govt. cartridge and factory blue finish. It also has a matte black synthetic stock with cut checkering, blued steel receiver and magazine tube, hammer block safety.
This model is made by Marlin Firearms Co., which was founded in 1881 by John M. Marlin as J.M. Marlin Repeating Arms Company in North Haven Connecticut USA (USA). In 1901 they moved to New Haven where they continued manufacturing guns until 2006 when Remington Arms Company bought them out.[1]

Great rifle
Took it to the range today and was absolutely blown away!(pun intended) i cored out my target at 10 yards. Intuitive design holds 10 .38 special and 9 .357. Hardly felt any recoil with the .38s. It was like shooting a .22 . no jams, smooth action, and accurate as heck!
JEFF BELONCIK –
I LOVE LEVER GUNS! THIS WAS A FUN REVIEW, THANKS FOR POSTING.
I INHERITED A NOBLE MODEL 275 22LR LEVER ACTION FROM MY FATHER IN LAW. IT HAD BEEN SITTING UP ON HIS CLOSET SHELF RUSTING AWAY FOR DECADES, SO I BEGGED IT OFF OF HIM WITH THE EXCUSE OF “CLEANING IT UP”. FORTUNATELY HE’S NEVER ASKED FOR IT BACK. 🙂 I REBLUED THE BARREL AND OTHER METAL, AND THE STOCK WILL BE MY NEXT PROJECT. EVEN CLEANED UP, IT’S NOT THAT MUCH TO LOOK AT, BUT IT’S A FUN LITTLE PLINKER, AND SURPRISINGLY ACCURATE.

GOOD REVIEW, SOUNDS LIKE THEY FINALLY GOT RID OF THE MARLIN TRIGGER FLOP. I LOVE LEVER ACTIONS, WIFE HAS A HENRY BIG BOY SHE LOVES. I’M A LITTLE DIFFERENT MY FAVORITE LEVER GUN IS A SAVAGE MODEL 1899 CARBINE IN 25-35 IT’S SO SMOOTH AND ACCURATE. THIS MARLIN LOOKS TO BE A GREAT SWAMP OR BOG GUN, SHORT AND HECK OF A KNOCK DOWN POWER AT SHORT TO MEDIUM RANGE, WOULD LOVE TO PICK UP ONE SOMETIME DOWN THE ROAD, THOUGH MY 458 SOCOM AR IS WORKING OUT PRETTY WELL RIGHT NOW.
Louis Nicholas –
I WENT YEARS, DECADES EVEN, COLLECTING SEMI-AUTOS AND BOLT ACTIONS. THEN, A FEW YEARS AGO I DECIDED I NEEDED A LEVER ACTION. I STARTED WITH A HENRY .22. I DISCOVERED THE ROSSI R-92’S AS WELL. SO, NOW ON TOP OF THAT INITIAL LITTLE .22 I HAVE A HENRY IN .327 FEDERAL MAGNUM (THIS ONE IS JUST A PEACH AND VERSATILE) AND ROSSI’S IN .38SPL/.357 MAG, .44 MAG, AND TWO IN .45 THE LATTER OF WHICH IS A SWEET LITTLE SS MODEL WITH A 16 IN. BARREL. ALL OF MY FIREARMS ARE FUN TO SHOOT BUT, I MUST SAY THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT RUNNING A LEVER GUN. NOW, I NEED TO GO GET A .30-30 BECAUSE….GUNS.
Andrew Smith –
Love this rifle!!!!
I have been waiting for these rifles to come out for quite some time. I missed the boat when they were half this price. I recently bought this and another Marlin 1894 CSBL, both in .357 mag. I like this one better than the more expensive one, the CSBL. The finish is really well done, both wood and metal! The sights were well regulated, unlike the CSBL model, out of the box. Accuracy was plenty good. Trigger was a little heavier than I thought it could be, at 6-1/2 lbs with a Timney trigger pull gauge. Wild West Guns trigger and a spring set may help that. We will see. The rifle fed and functioned fine, as expected. Loading cartidges through the loading gate was harder than I thought it should be too. I will be looking into getting that loading gate spring lightened if possible as well. All in all the rifle is worth getting. Very happy with my purchase. I like this base model just as much or more than the CSBL stainless rifle with the rail and ghost ring sights.
Smith Oscar –
I couldn’t decide between the 1894 (357magnum) and this… So I got both and that means you get a comparative review! The Malin 1894 is easier to shoot (less recoil) and cheaper to shoot (it can fire 38special which you can get for $25 for 50), but the 1895 is still a lot of fun and has a hell of a lot more stopping power. The recoil on 45-70 is insane. You’ll need to practice getting a firm seat on your shoulder to prevent bruising. The ammo (45-70) is hard to come by and is super expensive. ($36 for 20) So I bought a press and started making my own. Still, I highly recommend this gun. I actually think it’s a better deal than the 1894 since it comes with the rail and the strap. I’ve shot it a half dozen times. It’s super accurate, the lever action is smooth, reloading is easier than my 1894 (the magazine on the 1894 sort of sticks). The factory rail on this is great and I’ve put a 3x scope on it. Even without the sight, the ghost sights are super accurate. I was within an inch at 25 yards the first time I shot it. The factory strap is nice braided material, the barrel is threaded… I couldn’t ask for any improvement.
Rene Gadeg –
Love everything about it
Bought the 4570. Nice short barrel perfect for dense bush or as bear defence during archery season. With scope shoots 1″ groups at 100m. Needs a little time to break-in. Good rail and sight too. It’s great to save $400 compared to SS guide gun.
Paul Hubbard –
FIRST OF ALL, GOD BLESS AMERICA! I HAVE BEEN A FIREARMS GUY FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS AND HAVE A COLLECTION OF PIECES THAT GOES BACK WELL OVER A HUNDRED YEARS, 8-9 YEARS AGO I PURCHASED A MARLIN GUIDE GUN IN 45-70 (FATHER ALWAYS SAID THIS CARTRIDGE HAS POTENTIAL) FOR NORTHERN WISCONSIN DEER HUNTING. LOTS OF BRUSH… GREAT GUN, HAVEN’T MISSED YET. NOW THE INTERESTING POINT, MY EYES ARE STARTING TO FAIL AND IRON SIGHTS ARE TOUGH. IN THE BRUSH A SCOPE IS TOUGH TO FIND THE TARGET AND GET THE DEAL DONE. I HAVE MOUNTED A RED-DOT ON MY GUIDE GUN AND IT IS A REAL GAME CHANGER. THE GUN IS AS ACCURATE AS I CAN SQUEEZE, THE RED-DOT JUST MAKES THE SITUATION A WHOLE LOT MORE FUN. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT TO PUT A RED-DOT ON A LEVER OR MORE CRAZY A 45-70! I AM TELLING YOU IS WORKS LIKE A CHAMP. MARLIN YES! BETTER IS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU THE SHOOTER NEEDS TO SEE THE TARGET AND MAKE THE SHOT. 45-70 MAKES HUNTING IN BRUSH MUCH EASIER, THE LITTLE RED DOT HAS MADE ME A SINGLE SHOT HUNTER.
James Greenn –
First time online buyer from Chicago here. Looked around for a Marlin 1895 dark series model for a long time. Came to strap weapons shop and saw they had them In stock no one else ANYWHERE had any. I Immediately thought this was a scam site. Did some research and talked to some people and they assured me it wasn’t so I went to order one and saw they were sold out. Checked in periodically and saw they had more in so I pushed that buy button. I ordered on August 29 and got it at my local FFL guy on September 08. Not bad at all. I wanted to share that part first for anyone having second thoughts about ordering from these guys because they are legit. Now for the Marlin. It is a beautiful beast! I love the look, feel, and history of my lever baby. I decided to go with this model because I love deep woods excursions with my family and wanted a little something to thwart any wild chupacabra attacks also a JIC for when the zombies decide to appear. I haven’t gotten a chance to shoot it yet because I’m in Chicago and ammo is taxed here so I have to make a protest trip to another county to purchase cheaper ammo as this caliber 45-70 is pricey to begin with. Needless to say as far as I know this baby is a beast and fun to shoot so i look forward to getting it out there in the next couple of weeks. So order with confidence because these guys have the inventory. I will say that I called them and didn’t get a response but that said I would definitely order from strap weapons shop again in a heartbeat. Hope this helps! Stay safe!
